The introduction of a lipophilic moiety into a gadolinium chelate results in an MR contrast medium that is selectively taken up into hepatocytes. This innovative contrast medium improves both sensitivity for detecting liver lesions and diagnostic confidence in lesion characterization compared to computed tomography, most notably for small hepatic lesions (<1 cm).
